Playing a brass instrument is enormous fun, and especially when playing with other people.
Our Beginner Band is a great opportunity for people who have recently started to play a brass instrument to play with other learners, whatever your age. Conducted by Judith Atkins, our Beginner Band meets at Blewbury School (click here for directions) each Wednesday early evening from 6.00 – 6.45.
The Beginner Band is designed to enable less experienced players (up to about Grade 2 level) to gain an understanding of four-part music before moving on to the more challenging music played by our Learner Band (which is designed for players up to about Grade 4 or 5). Each week, Beginner Band players will be joined for the last 15 minutes by Learner Band players, providing an opportunity to play alongside more experienced players in a larger ensemble.
If you have never played a brass instrument before, we suggest you first have a number of private lessons with Ian Barlow to get you going (click here for more details of private lessons). Then when you know the basic valve fingering (or slide positions, for a trombone) it will be time to join our Beginner Band. There is no charge for attending our Beginner Band, beyond normal band subscriptions of £40 per annum plus £40 if you use an band instrument, or half these amounts (ie £20 subs plus £20 instrument rental) if you are “unwaged” (in full-time education, unemployed, retired).
